The 4th International Ecological Architecture and Planning Symposium, organized by the Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects, was held in Antalya on 15–17 September 2011.
At the fourth symposium, following the previous events held in 2005, 2007, and 2009, the main theme "Ecological Improvement / Retrofitting" was addressed. Within the scope of the symposium, approaches aimed at the ecological improvement of existing buildings, urban areas, and planning processes in accordance with ecological principles were evaluated under the headings of architecture, planning, education, and practice.
The symposium, which aimed to provide an international platform for discussion and the exchange of knowledge, included not only paper presentations but also different forms of participation such as workshops, studio workshops, field studies, and group work.
Aim and Scope of the Symposium
The increasing visibility of environmental problems on a global scale necessitates the reassessment of the impacts of the built environment on the ecosystem. The disciplines of architecture and planning assume significant responsibility in the processes of conserving natural resources, reducing energy consumption, creating healthy living environments, and transforming the existing building stock.
The ecological architecture approach aims to reduce damage to nature, promote the use of renewable energy resources, improve energy management, and ensure the health and comfort conditions of users.
Within this framework, in addition to designing new buildings according to ecological principles, the ecological improvement of existing buildings and largely built-up cities is also of great importance. Interventions carried out to improve the energy performance of existing buildings, reduce resource consumption, and limit their environmental impacts constituted the principal area of discussion of the symposium.
