The theme is structured around three fundamental concepts:
Climate
The climate crisis is transforming the form of cities, building production processes, energy consumption, water resources, and natural systems. It is no longer a matter of choice, but a necessity, for the disciplines of architecture and planning to develop carbon reduction strategies, climate adaptation policies, nature-based solutions, and resilient settlement models.
Heritage
Cultural heritage is not merely a witness to the past; it embodies the collective memory of societies, their local knowledge, and the accumulated experience of their relationship with nature. Traditional building cultures, local production practices, and historic environments provide significant knowledge for adaptation to the climate crisis. Protecting heritage is not only a means of preserving the past but also a way of constructing the future in a sustainable manner.
Communities
The impacts of the climate crisis do not affect all segments of society equally. Children, older adults, women, migrants, and vulnerable communities are affected by this process to a greater extent. Therefore, ecological transformation should be addressed not only through technical solutions but also in conjunction with the principles of participation, social justice, solidarity, and shared responsibility. The resilient cities of the future cannot be established without strong communities.
Antalya and the Mediterranean Basin possess particular significance for these discussions. On the one hand, with its coastal cities that experience the impacts of the climate crisis intensely, and on the other, with its rich natural and cultural heritage, the Mediterranean constitutes a laboratory in which fundamental questions concerning the future of the world can be explored. Tourism pressure, the management of water resources, the protection of coastal areas, forest fires, agricultural transformation, and the future of cultural landscapes are among the priority issues confronting this region.
